7 Habits that Cause Pregnancy Problems

Different things can cause problems during pregnancy and harm the fetus. Sadly, some of these things are habits done by the mother herself. Sometimes these are things that, if done when not pregnant, will not cause any complications in a woman. Sometimes these habits are just plain bad. The following are seven very dangerous habits for a pregnant woman.

  1. Having multiple sex partners. Multiple sex partners can increase risk of STD’s, which in turn may lead to birth and pregnancy complications, like low birth weight or premature birth. The mother can also pass a disease or infection to her newborn during childbirth.
  2. Drinking alcohol. Drinking can cause fetal alcohol syndrome, including symptoms like low birth weight, medical problems, and behavior abnormalities. Whatever the mother consumes finds its way to the fetus. A woman should stop drinking as soon as she know she’s pregnant.
  3. Drinking caffeine. The FDA warns against caffeine consumption during pregnancy and suggests quitting or reducing consumption at the very least. Caffeine has been shown to affect fetal heart rates and awake time (fetuses grow when sleeping).
  4. Taking drugs. Taking illicit drugs is dangerous and can lead to a lot of health complication. Taking illicit drugs while pregnant doubles that danger as the woman now carries another life inside her. Taking legal drugs, such as methadone, and other artificial remedies should also be avoided unless it is prescribe by a doctor.
  5. Smoking. Smoking is not only bad for you, but bad for your baby as well. Smoking during pregnancy reduces the amount of oxygen that the baby receives and increases the risk of miscarriage, bleeding, and morning sickness.
  6. Exercising. Moderate exercise is helpful as it improves the mother’s mental state and can increase oxygen flow to the fetus. However, over-exertion can be dangerous. Most experts recommend reducing your exercise intensity during pregnancy.
  7. Getting exposed to chemicals. Pregnant women should take care to avoid all kinds of unnatural chemicals, particularly pesticides. They should also avoid noxious gas, such as those produced when using some illicit drugs.
